Mindfulness-based Art Therapy (MBAT)


Mindfulness-based Art Therapy is using Art Therapy for Mindfulness exercise. This is a program focus on Mindfulness during Art Therapy session to provide a safe space, fun, therapeutic, non-judgemental and effective way for mental wellness. It is in short MBAT or Mindfulness-based Art Therapy.

What is Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a general term referring to a wellness calm state of mind and free from distraction or judgement. It is a mind for being present and fully engaged in certain healthy activity. And, we are fully aware of our thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them. Mindfulness-based approaches have been used to promote mental health and general well-being. We can learn how to access our own mindfulness for us to relax, rejuventae and recharge. Mindfulness skill can be helpful when faced with challenging circumstances or difficult situations.

What is Art Therapy 

Art Therapy is a mental wellness program that uses ART as a core medium for treatment. Art therapy can provide a person or team to build inner strength, resilience, resourcefulness, mindfulness, healing and recovery. Art Therapy touches both physical and psychological part of the mind and body. Art Therapy using visual language for expression, process and product.

Art Therapy and Mindfulness

Art provides a safe channel for feeling of flow and freedom during the process. Art Therapy is a healing form of mental wellness to tap into deeper inner self. In Art Therapy, a person can feel the present moment, without judgement and fully into state of mindfulness. Art can be therapeutic channel for mind and body wellness. Indeed, the Mindfulness is common experience during Art Therapy. We can focus on the Mindfulness area using Art as therapy.

Why Mindfulness-based Art Therapy

There is a growing need for us to take time off and screen off from our smartphone, tablet, computers or digital world. It is for mind to take a good break, for the eyes to rest  and body to be physically active. By exploring creativity and art, we can enter into a therapeutic inner space of Mindfulness and Art as Therapy.

We integrate Origami into Mindfulness-based Art Therapy to explore the art of paper folding into the process. For people who enjoy folding art as Therapy, they can focus using Mindfulness-based Origami Art as Therapy. It is also term as MINDrigami Therapy.

For Who

This is suitable for people from all ages: children and adult; personal or group, individual or family; senior adults (Geriatric). No prior knowledge of  Art and Mindfulness is required.

MBAT helps to develop left and right brain functioning by actively using left and right hands to do creative Art with hands and mind co-ordination. It can help us the balancing between both left and right brain.

Art Therapist Credentials

This program is created and facilitated by Art Therapist - Mr. Lee Thiam Seng (Paul). Mr. Lee is an artist, art therapist and consultant. He is the founder of UniqArts and Technologies in 1995. Mr. Lee holds a Master of Arts Art Therapy from LaSalle College of the Arts and a Bachelor Degree in Management from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia.  He has been practicing Art Therapy since 2009. His experience including individual and group art therapy treatment for pupils at Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN), women with breast cancer at KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), psychotic patients at Changi General Hospital (CGH) Psychiatric Ward, older adults (geriatric) at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital's (KWSH) Day Rehabilitative Center and Geriatric Day Hospital (GDH) at CGH. Mr. Lee conducted a research at KKH with Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for his Art Therapy masters thesis: "Art Therapy as a Modality of Healing in Stages - For Women with Breast Cancer." Mr. Lee has over 20 years of paper folding experience and this is a program created by integrating Mindfulness, Art Therapy and Origami. Read more about Art Therapist Mr. Paul Lee


Fee and Duration

MBAT fee is S$300/= for with 2 hours session, inclusive of all art supplies. Please contact us for your needs.
